Stellantis NV is implementing temporary layoffs and suspending production at key plants in response to new US tariffs. The company will halt operations at its Windsor, Ontario, plant from April 7 for two weeks, while its Toluca, Mexico, facility will remain idle throughout April.
The move affects around 900 workers at its US subsidiaries and 4,500 hourly employees in Windsor. In Toluca, employees will report to work but will not assemble vehicles per contract terms.
Antonio Filosa, CEO of Stellantis North America, attributed the shutdowns to the tariffs and stated the company is evaluating long-term impacts. He emphasized ongoing discussions with government officials, unions, and suppliers. The production pause also aims to reduce high vehicle inventory amid sluggish sales.
