The EU is ready to retaliate against the US if necessary in response to President Donald Trump’s impending tariff hikes, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said. While emphasizing that Europe did not initiate the trade dispute, she warned that the EU has a strong plan to strike back.

Trump has promoted April 2 as Liberation Day, when he is set to announce significant tariffs on steel, aluminum, and cars. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed a press conference on Wednesday but provided no specifics. Trump has hinted at imposing reciprocal tariffs, mirroring those of other countries.

The EU has already imposed countermeasures on US$28 billion worth of US goods in response to past tariffs. Meanwhile, Canada, China, Japan, and South Korea are also preparing retaliatory measures.
