Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum criticized the US' 25% tariffs on Mexican goods, calling them unjustified, while withholding details of Mexico's planned counter-tariffs until Sunday.

Mexico’s industrial association (Coparmex) said the US tariffs violate the US-Mexico-Canada (USMCA) free trade agreement, warning they could disrupt North American economic integration, trigger a Mexican recession, and cause inflationary pressures.

The US tariffs, effective March 4, also include 10% on Canadian energy imports and 25% on non-energy imports. Canada responded with immediate 25% tariffs on US$30 billion of US imports, with plans for another US$125 billion of imports in 21 days. Besides, China imposed new 10% tariffs on US agricultural products in retaliation.

Sheinbaum’s delay in announcing counter-tariffs suggests hopes for negotiations to resolve the issue early.
