Europe leads way in aluminium beverage can recycling, aims for 100% circularity by 2050

A recent report by Metal Packaging Europe and European Aluminium highlights a strong performance in aluminum beverage can recycling across the EU, UK, Switzerland, Norway, and Iceland, with a recycling rate of 75% (74.6%) in 2022.
The recycling rate was slightly down from the previous year, but the total recycled amount reached a record 580,000 tons, marking a 1.7% increase. This saved 5.4 million tons of CO₂eq in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
Industry leaders emphasize that while progress is strong, enhancing national collection and sorting infrastructure, particularly Deposit Return Systems, is essential for meeting the EU’s 90% recycling target.
Looking forward, the industry is committed to achieving 100% circularity of aluminum beverage cans by 2050 through ongoing investment and system improvements, according to Krassimira Kazashka, CEO of Metal Packaging Europe.
