A massive fire hit an industrial area in Cariacica, next to Vitória, the capital of the Brazilian southeastern state of Espírito Santo. The fire, which started on January 4 and controlled the following day, reached an area used by the Cariacica plant of Simec for ferrous scrap storage used as raw material by the company. Simec was quoted by the local press saying the fire is controlled and the site is isolated, adding the area is not located near houses or vegetation, and no employees were injured and there is no risk for the neighboring community. It is not clear if the accident will affect the operations of the Cariacica plant which has a crude steel capacity of 600,000 mt per year.
