India's steel ministry opposes limiting imports of low ash metallurgical coke, a key steelmaking ingredient, because of strong domestic demand and concerns about the quality of local production, despite local producers' complaints about rising imports since 2019/20.
In April, India's Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR) recommended capping imports at 2.85 million metric tons for one year. The final decision rests with the commerce ministry, which has not yet commented.
China, Indonesia, and Poland are top suppliers of metallurgical coke to India. Over the past four years, India's imports of low ash metallurgical coke have surged more than 61%. The steel ministry argues that domestic producers cannot fully meet demand, particularly regarding quality.
Nagendra Nath Sinha, the steel ministry's top civil servant, warned that restricting imports could disrupt supply chains and increase costs, potentially harming smaller steel producers.
