Commodities trader and miner Glencore will strive to restart its Nordenham zinc smelter next year, which has been under care and maintenance for more than a year.
The Nordenham zinc smelter has an annual production capacity of zinc and zinc alloys of around 165,000 tons. The restart was expected to bring more employment opportunities and economic benefits to the local community and to meet the European market demand.
It was understood that the smelter would resume roasting zinc concentrates in the first quarter of next year. The decision to restart this German smelter would be made next year.
After Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last year, the electricity price surged, which forced many smelters, mainly energy-intensive zinc and aluminum smelters, to close or suspend production.
