Bernhard Osburg, president of the German Steel Federation, pointed out that the German coal era is over, the transition to climate neutrality is a very large technological change for the steel industry, and the current environment is very challenging.
Almost all major German steel producers have started production transformation. Although most factories still use natural gas as fuel, they will use hydrogen as fuel in the long run step by step, and pursue a 30% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions by 2030 and a 100% reduction by 2045.
The direction of the transition plan had been controversial in the past, with the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology's scientific advisory committee calling for green-led markets to be prioritized over climate protection contracts.
Bernhard Osburg said that both green-led markets and climate protection contracts should be given equal weight in order to bring climate-friendly products to the market. However, in order to establish a green-led market, green steel should be defined first, which is still to be discussed.
