According to Ukrmetalurgprom, the Ukrainian steel trade association, Ukraine produced roughly 284,000 tons of crude steel in January, dropping by 84.7% from the same period a year ago due to the war between Russia and Ukraine.

In the past four months, missile attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure and power shortages affected the steel business. Due to the power shortage, Ukraine's steel and iron ore mining industries operated at 15%-20% capacity.

The war led to the disruption of the logistics chain and the destruction of Azovstal and Ilyich Iron and Steel Works, two main steelworks owned by Metinvest.
