According to the steel mills’ first-quarter production plan released by the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), Japan’s crude steel production was expected to fall by 4.9% to 21.9 million tons due to a slow recovery in demand led by the automobile industry.
Japan’s crude steel production has dropped year on year for five consecutive quarters, and the quarterly production has been lower than 22 million tons for three quarters in a row.
In 2022, Japan’s crude steel production slid by 7.9% year on year to 88.12 million tons, which fell below 90 million tons again after 2020.
