Pralhad Joshi, India’s coal minister, said at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP27) in Egypt that coal will play an important role in India until 2040 and beyond. The fuel was an affordable energy source, and the demand for coal in India hasn’t peaked yet. Therefore, no transition from coal in India will happen in the foreseeable future, said Pralhad Joshi.
India has long refused to give up coal, and it maneuvered with China at last year's COP26 Climate Summit to block stronger commitments to quitting it.
