South Korea's LG Energy Solution (LGES) began constructing nickel processing plants in Indonesia. The construction is under the plan to manufacture electric vehicle batteries.
LGES said that they will build a smelter that is worth US$3.5 billion, and its output will reach 150,000 tons of nickel sulfate every year. Besides that, LGES will invest US$2.4 billion in building a plant. It would produce 220,000 tons of precursor and 42,000 tons of cathode every year. These constructions were expected to supply the main raw material for its planned 200 gigawatt-hours battery cell plant in the industrial town of Karawang in West Java.
Apart from that, the company will sign an agreement with Indonesian state miner Aneka Tambang (Antam) to invest in a nickel mine on the eastern island of Halmahera. The mine is forecasted to produce 16 million nickel ore.
