Spain-based ferro-alloys producer Ferroglobe has temporarily shut down a manganese alloy furnace in the country due to the current high cost of energy, according to reports and trade sources on Monday January 17.

The company, which has shut down a silicon furnace at its Sabón plant in Spain in recent months, has now halted operations at three of the four operational manganese alloy furnaces at its Boo plant in Santander, on the northern coast of the country. Officials at Ferroglobe could not be reached for comment at the time of publication. “The Ferroglobe plant will run with only one furnace producing ferro-manganese,” a trade source told Fastmarkets. “And it seems that Ferroglobe’s Sabón plant in Spain, which makes silicon metal, will also reduce its production to one furnace as well.” Ferroglobe has cut production during peak pricing periods and has moved some orders to its facilities in neighboring countries, where energy costs are lower, a company spokesperson
