European Commission initiates review of safeguard measure on steel products

According to an official announcement on December 17, 2021, the European Commission initiated a review of the safeguard measure on imports of certain steel products, covering 26 product categories. The EC will also examine whether any changes to the US Section 232 measure will significantly impact the steel trade flows.
The EC will conclude the review investigation of the safeguard measure by June 30, 2022, when the current quotas will expire.
This safeguard measure review was launched earlier than the initially scheduled February or March 2022.
The EC will analyze the evolution and patterns of the use of tariff-rate quotas (TRQ) and the comments which parties may make regarding this, and it will determine whether any adjustment resulting from changed circumstances may be warranted in the Union interest.
The information and supporting evidence submitted by interested parties on the safeguard measures and the US Section 232 changes must be given to the EC by January 10, 2022.
