According to statistics from Vietnam Customs, Vietnam imported around 406,000 tons of ferrous scrap in September, rebounding by 10.1% compared to the previous month. However, the volume was still lower than the monthly average for this year due to the inactive demand during the COVID-19 blockade period.
Among them, the US was the biggest supplier, exporting around 161,500 tons of scrap to Vietnam, a year-on-year increase of 91%; followed by Japan’s 81,300 tons, down by 72% year on year.
In recent months, the US remained the main scrap supplier for Vietnam as Japan’s suppliers aimed their sales in the local market due to higher domestic demand and prices, as well as less shipping risk. Besides, Vietnam’s smaller buyers preferred US containerized scrap due to its more competitive prices.
In the first nine months of this year, Vietnam’s scrap imports totaled around 4.9 million tons, up by 14.5% year on year.
