The U.S. weekly raw steel output recorded notable increase by 46.6% during the week ending on May 22, 2021, when matched with the comparable week in 2020. This is in accordance with the latest weekly domestic production statistics released by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI).
The U.S. weekly domestic raw steel output totalled 1.793 million net tons (NT). The domestic mill capability utilization rate was 79.0%. It must be noted that the production had totalled only 1.223 million NT at a much lower capacity utilization rate of 54.6% during the corresponding week a year before. However, the weekly crude steel production declined marginally by 0.3% over the week. The production was 1.799 million NT during the week ended May 15, 2021.
The cumulative adjusted year-to-date U.S. raw steel production totalled 35.681 million NT through the week ending on May 22, 2021. This is up by 8.7% from the production which totalled 32.811 million NT during the same period in 2020. The capability utilization rate too recorded notable jump from 69.9% to 77.6% over the year.
The leading producer was the Southern region, with an output of 762,000 net tons. The production by Great Lakes region stood at 621,000 net tons during the week. The production by other regions (in thousand net tons) is as follows: North East-146, Midwest-184 and Western-80.
