The most recent trade statistics published by the U.S. Census Bureau indicates that exports of aluminum scrap registered modest decline during the first four months of the current year. The exports during this period were valued at $669.39 million, lower by 13.46% when matched with the previous year. The U.S. exports during the corresponding four-month period in 2019 had totalled $773.55 million.
India was the primary export destination of aluminum waste and scrap from the U.S. The value of exports to India totalled $124.1 million, accounting for nearly 19% of the total U.S. shipments. Meantime, the exports to China registered significant decline, falling by almost 14% from the previous year.
The second largest importer was South Korea, with inward shipments from the U.S. valued at $124.07 million. The South Korean imports surged higher significantly by approximately 15% year-on-year. Malaysia emerged as the third largest importer, receiving $97.47 million worth of aluminum scrap from the U.S.
The other key export market destinations were China ($68.22 million) and Mexico ($45.45 million).
Nearly 69% of the total aluminum scrap shipments out of the U.S. during Jan-Apr ‘20 were to the above five countries.
The U.S. imported $205.2 million worth of aluminum scrap during the first four months of the current year. This is upon comparison with the imports of $279.59 million during the year-ago period.
