The recent poll conducted on behalf of the Alliance for American Manufacturing, by the The Mellman Group, Inc., and Public Opinion Strategies, indicates that 63% of the 2018 electorate support the China tariffs or giving them more time. The poll was conducted during the period from August 28 to September 9, 2018.
According to the poll, nearly 33% of the respondents stated that the federal administration should keep the China tariffs. Meantime, 30% said that the U.S. should give China more time. Also, more voters were found concerned about possible measures to address China’s unfair trade practices rather than the potential of a trade war.
Among respondents planning to vote for a Republican candidate in the upcoming midterm elections, 49% supported the tariffs, while 28% noted that more time should be given. Nearly 19% of the respondents supporting Democratic candidate wanted to keep the tariffs and another 27% extended support for tariffs. 35% of undecided voters supported tariffs, while 41% want to give more time. The Trump administration tariff on Chinese imports enjoyed overwhelming 59% and 58% support from Hispanic and African-American voters.
A whopping 81% of the poll respondents extended full support to government actions on getting tough on China and other countries that practice unfair trade. Nearly 54% consider protecting American companies and workers against China’s continued violations of international trade rules. However, 37% feared that the tariffs are likely to spark a global trade war.
